The Breville® Oracle® is one of the most customizable machines that Breville® offers. The programmable features can be somewhat daunting so below is a break down of a few of them.

To enter the program mode, press the MENU button and rotate the SELECT dial to the desired function. To exit the program mode, press the MENU button again.

Shot Volume

  • The default shot volume is measured by time, 30 seconds for a 2 cup shot and 20 seconds for a 1 cup shot.
  • To adjust this, press the MENU button. The first item on the menu is ‘SHOT VOL”.
  • The default that shows up is the 1CUP selection. Turning the SELECTION dial will change this to 2CUP.

  • Press the SELECT button when the correct cup size is showing on the LCD to start an espresso extraction.
  • When enough espresso has been extracted, press the SELECT dial again to stop the extraction.
  • The machine will beep once to confirm the new setting, exit the menu and return to the main LCD screen.

Shot Temperature

  • The second selection on the menu is ‘SHOT TEMP’

  • To choose this function, when it is highlighted on the menu across the bottom of the LCD screen, press the SELECT dial.
  • The default temperature is 200°F. The temperature of the extraction shot can be adjusted up to 205°F and down to 190°F.
  • Turn the SELECT dial left or right until the LCD shows the desired temperature then press the SELECT dial to program that temperature.
  • The machine will beep once to confirm the new temperature setting, exit the menu and return to the main LCD screen.

Clean Cycle

BES980XL Cleaning Cycle

Select this function when choosing to run a ‘Clean Me!’ cleaning cycle. There is no programming for this but the program menu must be used to access it.

Set Clock

  • In order to set the ‘AUTO START’ function, the time must first be programmed into the machine. Though setting the clock is optional, this other functions will not be usable until the clock is set.
  • The default time is 12:00 AM when initially starting up the machine for the first time.
  • Turn the SELECT dial to the ‘SET CLOCK’ function then press the SELECT dial.
  • The clock is set via a 24 hour time frame. From the default setting, turning the clock to the left one click will move it to 11:59PM and one to the right will move it to 12:01AM.
  • Move the SELECT dial right or left until the correct time is reached.
  • Press the SELECT time to program the time.
  • The machine will beep once to confirm the setting of the clock, exit the menu and return to the main LCD screen.

Auto Start

  • The AUTO START function will warm the machine up automatically at the same time daily.
  • Move the SELECT dial until ‘AUTO START’ is highlighted on the menu across the bottom of the main LCD screen, then press the SELECT dial.
  • Turn the SELECT dial to either ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ depending on if the function is being turned on or off.
  • To select the time for the machine to start, adjust the SELECT dial left or right.
  • Once the correct time is reached, press the SELECT dial.
  • The machine will beep once to confirm the setting, exit the menu and return to the main LCD screen and a small clock symbol will appear on the upper left hand corner.

Auto Off

  • The ‘AUTO OFF’ function is a timer for the amount of time the machine is on and is not reliant on a clock. It measures the amount of time that the machine itself has been on.

  • Move the SELECT dial until ‘AUTO OFF’ is highlighted on the menu across the bottom of the main LCD screen, then press the SELECT dial.
  • This timer can be adjusted from 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and from 1 hr. to 8 hrs. in 1 hour increments.
  • When the desired time is on the screen, press the SELECT dial to program.
  • The machine will beep once to confirm the selection, exit the menu and return to the main LCD screen.

Tamp Set

  • This setting is a function for advanced use only. Adjusting these settings allows for altering of the coffee tamping force and polishing duration.
  • Move the SELECT dial until ‘TAMP SET’ is highlighted on the menu across the bottom of the main LCD screen, then press the SELECT dial.
  • The left digit will flash along with the word ‘FORCE’ located under the digit.
  • Turn the SELECT dial to adjust the setting from between 1 and 9.
  • Press the SELECT dial to confirm and move to the polishing time.
  • The left digits will flash along with the word ‘SECONDS’ located below them.
  • Turn the SELECT dial to adjust the polishing time from between 2 to 7 seconds.
  • Press the SELECT dial to program the settings.
  • The machine will beep once to confirm the settings, exit the menu and return to the main LCD screen.

Pre-Infusion

BES980XL Pre-infusion

  • This function is for advanced use only. This will allow you to control the pressure and duration of the pre-infusion phase of the extraction.
  • Move the SELECT dial until ‘PRE-INFUSE’ is highlighted on the menu across the bottom of the main LCD screen, then press the SELECT dial.
  • The left two digits will be flashing along with the word ‘POWER beneath them.
  • The pre-infusion power is defaulted to 60% of the pumps normal power.
  • By turning the SELECT dial, the power can be adjusted from 55% to 99%.
  • Press the SELECT dial and the second set of numbers will begin flashing along with the word ‘SECONDS’.
  • Turn the SELECT dial to choose the length, in seconds, that the pre-infusion will run. Please note that the shot time is 30 seconds for a 2 cup shot, including pre-infusion. Adjusting the pre-infusion will NOT adjust the shot time. If the pre-infusion time is adjusted up to 20 seconds, the entire extraction will still only take 30 seconds for a 2 cup shot.
  • The duration of the pre-infusion can be adjusted from 0 seconds up to 20 seconds.
  • When the desired duration is reached, press the SELECT dial to program.
  • The machine will beep once to confirm the programming, exit the menu and return to the main LCD screen.

Americano Adjust

  • This selection must be done by actually extracting an Americano in order to program extraction and water duration’s. Fill the portafilter, select a cup, lock the portafilter in place and position the cup beneath the portafilter AND hot water outlet.

  • Move the SELECT dial until ‘AMERICANO ADJUST’ is highlighted on the menu across the bottom of the main LCD screen, then press the SELECT dial.
  • Rotate the SELECT dial to the customer setting you’d like to program. A total of 6 custom settings are programmable in this menu and each will show on the screen as ‘SET 1′ up to ‘SET 6′.

  • Press the SELECT dial once the correct ‘SET’ is reached. The LCD will show a moving cup icon and the espresso extraction will begin.
  • When the desired amount has been extracted, press the SELECT dial again to begin the hot water flow.
  • When the desired amount of hot water has flowed into the cup, press the SELECT dial again to set the custom setting.
  • A cup icon will appear on the screen again and the machine will beep once to confirm the programming.
